Cooking with Kids

Cooking with your kids can be fun and healthy. Children enjoy helping out in the kitchen and are usually more willing to eat the food they are helping to prepare. They can be involved in all aspects of cooking, from gathering or buying ingredients, ‘reading’ recipes, measuring, stirring, and serving the food. All of these activities can expose children to healthy eating while increasing their independence and self-confidence. It is important to share kitchen tasks that are age-appropriate for your children. Children have their own pace to learn new skills. To be sure there will be some spillage, be patient and allow extra time for each task. When children help prepare food, remind them to wash their hands with soap and water before and after handling food or utensils preparing food.
